Collector's Guide: Understanding Vintage Pencil Grades

The H/B Hardness Scale

Pencil hardness is measured on a scale from 9H (hardest) to 9B (softest), with HB sitting in the middle.

  • H grades (1H–9H) — Hard graphite, produces light, precise lines. Used by draftsmen, engineers, and architects.
  • HB — The everyday standard. Balanced hardness and darkness, equivalent to a No. 2 pencil.
  • B grades (1B–9B) — Soft graphite, produces darker, broader marks. Favored by artists and illustrators.

What Makes a Vintage Pencil Special?

Modern pencils are manufactured to tight tolerances, but vintage pencils often have a character that's hard to replicate — subtle variations in graphite texture, distinctive lacquer colors, and typography that reflects the design sensibilities of their era.

What to Expect When You Buy

  • All pencils are sold individually unless otherwise noted.
  • Condition grades (Near Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good) follow our standard grading guide.
  • Vintage pencils are old stock — minor age-related characteristics are normal and part of their charm.
  • Care note: Vintage pencils may be brittle. Use a two-hole or manual crank sharpener
